A defence worker accused of spying and passing information "intended to be passed on to the enemy" has appeared in court in London.
Ian Parr, of Tylney Avenue, Rochford, Essex, was remanded in custody and will appear again at the Old Bailey on 3 April.

The 45-year-old worker with BAe Systems and Avionics based in Basildon, Essex, faces nine charges under the Official Secrets Act.

At Bow Street Magistrates Court on Monday Mr Parr spoke only once to confirm his name.

He was arrested on Friday in a joint operation involving police and the security services.

Mr Parr faces nine charges under the 1911 Act alleging that he obtained "documents and information prejudicial to the interest of the state which were intended to be passed on to the enemy".

These charges are said to relate to the HALO (Hostile Artillery Locater) project covering information "calculated to be, or might be, directly or indirectly useful to an enemy" and communicating it to another person.

The alleged destination of the material was not outlined in court.

Mr Parr also faces a charge of theft relating to the same project.

BAe Systems and Avionics employs 1,300 people at its head office in Basildon.

The company is one of the UK's leading suppliers of civil and military electronic systems and has more than 50 years experience in the field.

In a statement, Essex Police said: "The British national was arrested in Southend on Friday afternoon and questioned throughout the course of the Saturday.

"His charges relate to nine offences under Section One of the Official Secrets Act and one under the Theft Act 1968."

The charges facing Mr Parr under the Official Secrets Act carry a maximum of 14 years in prison.
